Autism: The Elephant in the Room

AUTISM: THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Hence the 12,000 percent increase in autism diagnoses since 1980. What is neglected in the narrative is the many elephants in the autism room that somehow continue to evade scrutiny. Until now. By the end of this year, my expose on autism assessment and diagnosis will be completed and submitted. This manuscript has been six years in formation and exposes the eight realities about autism assessment: bias, subjectivity, impairment, symptom or strength, differing perceptions by observer, DSM - 5 and autism tests, masking, and tacit procedural decisions that clinicians make which greatly impact the probability of a diagnosis. Subsequently, a new “read and rate” approach to autism rating scales is proposed. A diagnostician’s perceptive on autism is long overdue.
